Winemaker’s Musings, May 2014

As stated earlier, it was a rough winter. We have extensive damage to our Traminette and Vignoles vines with most of the trunks or cordons split. Those will have to be regrown from below ground.  There was also significant damage to our LaCrosse, DeChaunac, and Syrah vines. So it will be a rebuilding year for us. Luckily we had a huge harvest last year which see us most of the way through. As for the wine, I think this past season will be noted amongst my best. I will be taking the dry reds out of the barrel pretty soon. They are developing extremely well. I think every wine made from this vintage will be a medal quality wine. In two competitions we have won three Gold Medals for Dragon’s Red, Blushing Hawk, and Hummingbird. As well as nine Silvers for Winter White, Hummingbird, Moonstruck, Red Phoenix, Falco Red, and Traminette plus a couple of Bronze medals.

Cheers,

Jim
